How To Change Font Size In Onenote App
Apple Notes is not the only notes app for the iPhone and alternatives like Microsoft OneNote are excellent. The free app syncs cross-platform, discover these great tips for photos and fonts.
OneNote is part of Microsoft Office of course, but it is free and you do not need an Office 365 subscription to use it. It keeps on improving and receiving updates and while it has some tough competitors in Apple Notes and Google Keep, it has more features than both of them.
A few years ago, tabs across the top were used to select sections, but these days there is a simple list which is easy to see and to access. A plus in the top right corner enables you to create a new section or you can tap an existing section to open it.
Add photos to OneNote notes
Once in a section, like Quick Notes, down in the bottom right corner is a large plus button to create a new note. Press the camera icon in the toolbar above the keyboard to add a photograph to a new or existing note.
You then have the option to choose From Library or to Take Picture using the camera. Let's select From Library. Instead of taking and inserting a photo directly, I prefer to take lots of photos and then browse the library for the best one.
All the albums in the Photos app are listed and probably the best one to open is Recents. Open Recents and then just tap a photo you want to add to a note. Multiple photos can be added by tapping several photos and then pressing Done in the top right corner
Before the selected photos are then inserted into a new note, there is an opportunity to edit them. The first photo appears and tapping the screen shows a toolbar at the top with four icons. The first is to deleted the current photo, the second is to crop it and the third is to rotate it by 90 degrees, so it goes from portrait to landscape. Swipe left and right over the photo to see the others if you have added multiple ones.
The last icon in the toolbar shows a menu with Photo, Document and Whiteboard. What is this all about?
- Photo: Inserts the photo as an image as you would expect.
- Document: The photo is of a paper document, so the background is automatically cropped and the document straightened. The result is like a scanned document. It is good for all sorts of paper documents, receipts, invoices, and so on.
- Whiteboard: The photo is of a whiteboard, the sort of think used in meetings and presentations. It is processed to make the text and images drawn on the board stand out.
In the screenshot above, you can clearly see that I took a photo of a document, so this is selected in the menu.
More photo options
After inserting a photo into a OneNote note, tap it to access a toolbar with Cut, Copy, Delete, Rotate, Alt Text (a description like you might use n web images), and Set Picture as Background. Press and drag the handles (boxes and circles) on the sides and corners to resize the image, and press and drag the center to move it.
There is also a funny squiggle icon at the top. Tap it and use the drawing tools to draw on the photo. If the photo is a document for example, you might want to use the highlighter pen to mark words or paragraphs. There doesn't appear to be color selection, just a yellow highlighter.
OneNote font options in settings
Let's take a look at the display of notes and how it can be changed in the latest version of OneNote for the iPhone. Press the three dots menu button in the top right corner of the screen and then press Settings.
In the Settings, press Edit & View. At the top is Default Font and Default Size. There is a control for adjusting the default size of the text in notes and you just press the plus and minus buttons to change it.
Press Calibri (usually the default font) next to Default Font to select a different default font for notes. There is a huge collection to choose from. Fonts that have a cloud icon are not currently on the iPhone, but tapping it installs it. Fonts without a cloud icon are already installed.
There must be hundreds of fonts and the list seems to go on forever. I would not install large numbers of fonts by pressing the cloud icon next to them. Fonts take up storage and memory and I don't know how well the iPhone copes with large numbers. Just choose the half dozen you use the most.
